Bruiser Brody
I thought it'd be fun to share how I'm working right now.
First, I draw the piece out in black and white. For this, I worked the outline out in pen, then came in with brush and ink to spot the blacks.
After that, on the page preceding the black and white illustration in my sketchbook, I roughly trace in the basic outlines of the shapes and then glop in some energetic watercolors.
I scan both in, then set the black and white scan as a multiply layer and place it over the watercolor scan, giving us the final result. I read on Dustin Nguyen's blog that he copies the watercolor layer and pastes it over the top of the watercolor scan and sets the top layer as a multiply layer, then merges the two, eliminating the transparent effect you get when you scan in watercolors. I've been doing that for a little while now to favorable results.

Bret Hart vs The Stomper
Done with ink and watercolor:
I tried out something a little different with this one. I did the ink drawing on one page, then light-boxed in the basic outlines of the shapes and did the loose painting on another page. I'm fairly pleased with the outcome and plan to do more this way, see where I can take the look.

Roger Kirby
Done with ink:
Harley Race described Roger Kirby as someone who had everything needed to become a major star, but the planets never properly aligned for him, mostly due to the territorial wars of the early-to-mid-eighties between the NWA and the WWF. After retiring from wrestling, Kirby went on to become a writer for The Kansas City Star.

Ric Flair
Done with ink and watercolor:
Woooo! Maybe the best example of a wrestler living his own hype, Ric Flair is a sixteen time world champion and one of the best in the history of pro wrestling. I was really excited to go to what at the time was billed as his retirement match at WRESTLEMANIA 24 in Orlando, FL. I'm not so excited to hear he's going to tour Australia and work matches against Hulk Hogan, but Flair hasn't been handling his retirement the best and being back under the lights may be where he needs to be.

Bob Geigel
Done with ink and watercolor:
One of the absolute nicest guys in wrestling, who many, including Harley Race, describe as their best friend in the business, Bob Geigel is one of the unsung heroes of the squared circle. While he was a three-time president of the NWA, Geigel likes to talk more about his college days at the University of Iowa, where in 1948 he placed third in the NCAA wrestling tournament after Verne Gagne and Charles Gottfried, and in 1949 placing second after Verne Gagne. Geigel and Gagne would go on to have a long personal and professional friendship. In Kansas City, he is fondly remembered as the promoter of Central States Wrestling with Harley Race and Pat O'Connor. Geigel's a good guy.

Wahoo McDaniel
Done with ink and watercolor:
A popular and successful football player for the NFL in the 1960's, Wahoo McDaniel later translated his athletic skills to the squared circle. Ric Flair credits him as the man that showed him the ropes, and one of his best friends in wrestling.

Harley Race
Done with ink and watercolor:
Described by Ric Flair as by far the toughest man he ever set foot in the ring with, Harley Race was a seven time NWA World Champion, the first ever NWA US Champion, and inarguably one of the greatest champions of all time.
My Uncle George bears an uncanny resemblance to ol' Handsome Harl, and would occasionally be mistaken for him when out and about. He of course played right along as if he were the icon himself.

Pat O'Connor
Done with ink and watercolor:
A heavyweight champion for the AWA, NWA Central States, NWA British Empire, NWA Eastern States, Midwest Wrestling Association, NWA New Zealand, and the whole NWA, Pat O'Connor was regarded as one of the top workers of his time. Later, he was one of the owners of Central States Wrestling with Harley Race and Bob Geigel and a co-owner of the St Louis Wrestling Club with Race, Geigel and Verne Gagne.

Dory Funk
Done with ink and watercolor:
Dory Funk is of course the father of Dory Funk, Jr and Terry Funk, and was an influential promoter in Amarillo, TX, starting many great careers and opening relations with Japan's promoters. He held the NWA Southwest Tag Championship with Bob Geigel on two occasions, leading to a life-long friendship between the two.

Killer Kowalski
Done with ink and watercolor:
Getting the 'Killer' moniker after jumping off the ropes and landing accidentally on his opponent's head, severing the opponent's ear, and then unkowingly kicking the ear out of the ring, Killer Kowalski is one of the real legends of the squared circle and the man that trained the Cerebral Assassin himself, Triple H.
My good friend Tom's father, when he was a wee lad, went to a wrestling show where Kowalski was appearing. A young lady came up to him and his brother and convinced them to go into the dressing room to get Kowalski's autograph. When they broke in, an enraged Kowalski chased them out and proceeded to pursue them around the auditorium. I'm sure it was all a work, but he loves to still tell the story today.

Bruno Sammartino
Done with ink and watercolor:
Winning the WWWF title from Nature Boy Buddy Rogers after a 48 second match, Sammartino held it from 1963-1971, the longest title reign in the World Wide Wrestling Federation's history. He regained the title in 1973 and held it until 1977, giving him a total of eleven years as the champ. He also provided just about the worst color commentary ever during his stint with the Universal Wrestling Federation.

Here's where I'm at with it this week. I've always wanted to do something like this - both a detailed illustration of a cityscape and drawing right on my wall.
Here's a shot so that you can get the scale I'm working in:
Here you can see the progress I've made so far:
When I was three or four years old, one Saturday I woke up before my mom (I usually did to catch all of the cartoons) and after doing my 'first mural' I excitedly went into her room to wake her up. "Mom! The fish are in jail now!" I giggled.
She opens her eyes a little and groggily asks, "They're what?"
"Come and see!"
She didn't say anything while getting out of bed, but I'm sure the following two words were racing through her head, "Oh no..." Then I showed her my latest masterwork: I had taken a black crayon and drawn vertical bars all around the fish tank. Bad fish! You're going to jail! Poor Mom then had to figure out how to clean that crap off the glass and spent the better part of the morning working on it.

Mildred Burke
Done with ink and watercolor:
After viewing a women's wrestling match, made famous by Mildred Burke and then-husband Billy Wolfe, Egyptian acedemic Sayyid Qutb left America to his native Egypt to begin a series of writings blasting American culture, arguing that society's only hope was to go back to the religious strictures of seventh century Islam. His writings later were incorporated into the belief system of al Qaeda.

A Slightly Late Valentine's Present
Okay, a month late, but who's counting? Every holiday and special anniversary I do a picture of some sort for Katy. I initially thought I'd do a picture for Katy of her set in the near future having obtained several of her goals, and I was going to do it in a Hugo Pratt-school style, but instead I went more towards the influence of Virgil Finlay.
She liked it, by the way.

Done for the Remake/Remodel thread at Whitechapel for public domain character The Black Terror. I see the character entering the real world as a meme when the trendmakers in the fashion industry decide to buck their vapid ideals and instead push social responsibility and focusing on personal responsibility. The character's symbol of the Jolly Roger becomes a badge worn by people adopting these ideals, co-opting its original meaning like the GLBT community did with the rainbow.

Superhero Sunday - Year of the Cat

I originally called this 'Panda Law' when I came up with the concept back in 1994, but as I continued to study the Chinese Zodiac over the years I became fascinated by the legends behind why the cat is not included in the Zodiac. The story is that a guy buys a sword at a swap meet and discovers that it is mystical in origin and whoever owns it is tasked with hunting down the various animal spirits of the Chinese Zodiac. I would build up each of the spirits and the people that they possess in association with the personality types for people who fall under each sign. Some would ally and some would be enemies in their own rights, and all of it would be in relation with the Cat Spirit and the truth behind why it was not part of the Animal Zodiac.

Superhero Sunday - The Mystery
I created this character when I was in eighth grade. He used all sorts of high tech stuff that came from a lost civilization in South America located inside of a dormant volcano. He had gauntlets that could produce a Wolverine-like claw or Spider-Manish grappling lines. This is the kind of stuff you come up with when you're socially awkward and not good with the girls.
I'd like to do him today along the same lines with a more action-oriented spin. He'd be a guy with a helmet that enabled him to have heightened senses and use more of his brain than the average human does. He'd still be rooted in South American lost civilization folklore, so I'd approach his appearance like how El Santo looked in his various movies: Pretty much wearing whatever plus his mask. He'd have on whatever outfit goes best with the mission/adventure he's on. I'd do this as a really fun and out-there book in a Jodorowsky vein by way of 1980's Saturday morning cartoons. He'd go from fighting Mayan gods to lesbian biker gangs to zombie vampires to mad philosophers. This would be a really fun book.
Here's how he looked in his original appearance circa 1994:

Garbo and the Charnel House
Ink and wash on 11x14 bristol, colored in Photoshop
I was playing around with a lot of my interests on this piece. Greta Garbo of course, from a photo of her taken around 1929, her last with Ruth Harriet Louise. The picture was of her standing in front of a painting, but I didn't really like the painting. Earlier this week I was flipping through Pulp Hope again and noticed how Paul Pope incorporated Picasso a lot into his work, and Picasso is without a doubt my favorite painter. So I flipped through my collection of Picasso's work and came across 'The Charnel House' and it felt perfect for this piece. I hadn't really tried to duplicate another artist's work since high school art class and remembered how much can be learned from doing that.

Postcard
Here's the image I'm going to be using for my first set of postcards (for those not in the loop, I'm printing these up to send out to art directors to drum up freelance work). It was originally done for The Star's Urban Living section, but the AD there felt this was 'too ominous' for their fashion issue. I did another pic that's going to be used by them that will be on the back of the postcard. Once the issue ships I'll put that up here as well.

Logo Design
One of my clients wanted me to redesign their logo, as what they had was fairly (totally) generic. I was really, really happy with this design, as was the client:

They're in the residential real estate business, so they wanted to reflect that, as well as have a simple, iconic look for their logo, without directly tying them into their sister companies. So, I went with the outline of a house inside of the square, which subliminally also represents their initials (RPR). They LOVED that touch.

Rob Schamberger Makes Logos
Hey, remember me?
Sorry for dropping off the face of the earth, gang (more on that in the next post), but I've been really busy of late. Like, EXTREEEEEMEEELY busy. The last three weeks have really been eaten up by this freelance gig I picked up. Initially, it was going to just be logo work for a group of sister companies, but now it's turned into full-on web design and related services. Each time I finish one project, they're so happy they assign another one. Hey, who am I to turn down a sure thing?
Here's two of the logo's:

I really dug this one, just for its iconic look, but also because it subconsciously spells out the company's call letters (see?).

This one is the one that got everything rolling. This company is introducing a bunch of high-tech options to their current line of products, and were wanting to really give themselves an all-new, all-different look. So, I went with my favorite font, italic Georgia, for their main logo, and then added in the translucent 'microchip' design behind it, making it look like a traditional-yet-cutting-edge company. Plus, with the background being translucent, it really works with any background that you apply it to, like so:

So, this particular company then assigned me to overhaul their current website, which I've spent the last two weeks really focusing in on. The site's not live yet, or I'd share it with y'all, but I will once it is.
I've got another company yet to design a logo for, plus that first company, Reliable, is wanting me to do their website (they don't even really have one yet). This is only three of about thirty companies in this group, and things are starting to already look more promising.
Who'da'thunk it?

Latest Comissioned Piece

My most commonly requested style to work in for comissioned pieces is the illustrated one I'd developed while working on Black Chamber a few months back (although I've got a few for paintings now, as well). Normally they're pretty easy and straight-forward.
This one was a little tougher, though.
See, this boy here grew up into someone suffering badly from schizophrenia and eventually killed himself. I was asked to do this for the client to give to their aunt, the mother of the subject. I was asked to not just do it straight-forward, but to be a little more creative. Obviously, a great amount of care had to go into this. I really couldn't do anything psychedelic or play around with the colors too much, because of what eventually became of the boy.
It was also tough to work on, because my two step-brothers from my dad's second marriage killed themselves. I really put a lot of thought and care into this, because it very quickly became very personal for me.
But, I'm very happy with how it turned out, and I'm sure that his mother will appreciate it, and hopefully it will bring up the good memories of him. It did for me.

Dayjob Gallery
So, want to do something to brighten up your life and your coworkers at the same time? If you work in an office setting of some sort as I do, you've more than likely got at least one ugly, boring wall with nothing on it. Well, my buddy Gary Rittermeyer and I decided to turn one of those walls in our shared office space into an art gallery. Gary's an accomplished photographer, but rarely gets an opportunity or a reason to shoot anything that pushes his creativity. And, well, I can draw and stuff.
We change it up on the first Friday of each month, just like the 'real' galleries, and bring in some goodies for the folks who come in and peruse the works. Last month was some gourmet coffee, and this month, tomorrow, will be sparkling cider and cheese. This'll be our third 'showing', and I have to tell you, our office is buzzing about it. They just Can't Wait.
While everyone else is putting up gaudy, tacky X-Mas decorations, we're putting up tasteful fine art. And, yes, Gary and I have both received comissions because of the gallery stuff.
Here's the pieces I did last month:

I did a very rough pencil sketch for each, just laying down the placement of the shapes, and then went in with brush and ink. These are more or less in the order that I completed them, done over the course of a week.
For this month, I'm putting up two paintings. I hope to get pictures of them up tomorrow night (way too big to scan in).
