Roughs
I realized I haven't been putting up the roughs for the Too Soon stuff. So, for those of you interested, here's everything up to date:

100 Days In
Today's the one hundredth installment of Too Soon, for those of you keeping track. One hundred days straight so far of comic book goodness from me to you. I thought I'd take a look at what's come so far and give y'all some insight on the book so far.
When I started off, I wanted to really try to practice on my cartooning, working from very little reference, as compared to the amount I used for the last couple of books. Overall I've been unhappy with the results thus far and starting with today's installment you're going to see me working more on being an illustrator rather than a cartoonist. I'm fine with the fact that my brain's not wired that way.
Anyway.
Thus far I've introduced you to Mike, Tim, Audra, Bob 'Israel' Muldoon, Jane and reintroduced Eddie Mann and Angel. We've seen that a bank heist goes bad, but not how or why. We've discovered Audra is Israel's granddaughter, and that Eddie has somehow become involved in that relationship. We've seen Jane lose her job due to her alcoholism as her world gradually begins to appear more and more different. And there were a bunch of roadside memorials at the beginning that somehow tie everything and everyone together.
I've also been dropping hints here and there that tie this book in closely with The Black Chamber, Too Late and Batesville, but all of that doesn't start coming together just yet. It will in a big way starting with the next book, though.
So what's to come?
"Tell me if you’re having doubts about the plan, Audra."
"We wrestled each other all over the world, from bingo parlors to football stadiums."
"Hey, let me show you what I’m gonna do with my money."
"The booze goes right here!"
"You don’t want to see me get mad, okay?"

Jane
Jane is the only character to have appeared in all of the Unbroken Circle books to date. In The Black Chamber she was the bank president's secretary and in Too Late she was the waitress that brought Alderman Hannigan his water. I'm bringing her in as a full-fledged character now in Too Soon and her part of the story is going to be a major one, although you can't see it yet. This was something I picked up from The Wire, where every character introduced eventually plays a major part.
As these books continue to come out you'll see more and more how they're interconnected. For instance, earlier in Too Soon when the bank guard and employee talk about Vinnie? That's the Vinnie from Batesville. The Marilyn that Jane walks by in the hallway? Also from Batesville. There'll be another Batesville resident showing up later as well. In the pages of Batesville, there's already been a hidden reference to Eddie Mann. Dunno if anyone caught that yet. There's also going to be a reference to Black Chamber.
At first it's going to be small nods here and there, but it all is definitely leading to a conclusion. The book after Too Soon will give you a glimmer of that.
The art on this installment is different for a reason, by the way. I'm not telling you the reason though. You'll just have to see it unfold as her story unfolds.

"Eddie Lives!" or "To be the Man you gotta beat the Mann"
Who's the first person to get both of those references?
Eddie Mann, the star of my last graphic novel 'Too Late' returns in the pages of 'Too Soon' along with the lovely Angel and all of the mysteries that surround the two. You've read 'Too Late' right? No? Then read it again in its entirety, why don'cha! And for more on the genesis of Eddie Mann read this entry to find out how I've been evolving his character since I was in Junior High.
This scene is a bit of a visual repetition to his first scene in 'Too Late' as well creating a bit of continuity between the books. Think of it like the opening credits to a TV show.

Is It Too Soon?
![]()
I've talked about it for awhile, but my next graphic novel 'Too Soon' is starting to come together. The script's coming right along, and now I'm starting to thumbnail it and am working out how it's going to look.
I'll be running it here daily once I've got enough pages in the can, which will precipitate a bit of a change in how this blog looks in the near future. Should be cool!
Man, I never feel more alive than when I'm making comics. Fuckin' rules.
